Use of this sander and a dust collector with metal products is a potential fire hazard Support the workpiece adequately at all times during operation; maintain control of the work at all times. This oscillating spindle sander is designed and intended for use by properly trained and experienced personnel only. If you are not familiar with the proper and safe operation of a oscillating spindle sander, do not use until proper training and knowledge has been obtained. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form a habit of checking to see that keys and adjusting wrenches are removed from the machine before turning it on. KEEP THE WORK AREA CLEAN. Cluttered areas and benches invite accidents. DON'T USE IN A DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT. Don't use power tools in damp or wet locations, or expose them to rain. Keeps work area well lighted. KEEP CHILDREN AWAY. All visitors should be kept a safe distance from the work area. MAKE THE WORKSHOP KIDPROOF with padlocks, master swatches, or by removing starter keys. DON'T FORCE THE MACHINE. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. USE THE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force a machine or attachment to do a job for which it was not designed. USE THE PROPER EXTENSION CORD. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry^the current your machine will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in the line voltage resulting in power loss and overheating. The table following shows the correct size to use depending on the cord length and nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry which may get caught in moving parts. Nonslip footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair. - 1 ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Also use face or dust masks if the cutting operation is dusty. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses; they are not safety glasses. DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp and clean for best and safest performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE MACHINE FROM THE POWER SOURCE BEFORE SERVICING. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTENTIONAL STARTING. Make sure the switch is in the off position before plugging in. USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Consult the operator's manual for recommended accessories. The use of improper accessories may case the risk of injury to persons. NEVER STAND ON A MACHINE. Serious injury could occur if the machine is tipped of if the blade is unintentionally contacted. Unpack the machine carefully. Ensure that all loose parts are present as listed in this manual. If any items are missing, contact your dealer immediately. Remove the rust preventative oil. Use a soft cloth moistened with kerosene to remove the oil. WARNING! Do not use gasoline or lacquer thinner to remove the rust preventative oil, as these can damage the painted surfaces. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS The JOVS-10 is rated and prewired for 115 volt use. The sander comes with a plug designed for use on a circuit with an outlet that looks like (A) in the figure to the right. The JOVS-10 has a grounding plug (B) as illustrated. A temporary adapter (C) may be used to connect the plug to a two hole receptacle (D) if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should only be used until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. The gounding lug must be connected to a proper grounded surface. The outlet of the dust hood is 4" in diameter. Use a 4" flexible hose to connect the dust hood outlet to the dust collector. CAUTION: Do not operate the machine until the dust collector is working. -7 SELECTION GUIDE FOR DRUM TO TABLE INSERT This machine is furnished with 10 drums. Range of drum diameter is 1/4" to 4". Three table ins are supplied. If the drum diameter is changed, the table insert needs to be changed to the apprc ate size. The table below shows which table insert to use for various drum diameters WARNING! Failure to use the correct insert with the corresponding drum may result in injury! Tilt the table forward to the desired angle with your hands. An angle scale is provided at the right side of the trunnion to indicate the degree of table tilt. Tighten the two table lock knobs securely after the table degree has been adjusted. REMOVING THE DRUM Disconnect the machine from the power source. When removing the sanding drum, hold a open end wrench on the top jam nut. (A), Turn the spindle nut counter-clock wise to unscrew the sanding drum assembly.(B) The drum can now be taken out. WARNING: Disconnect the power source before removing the drum. -10 MOUNTING THE DRUM 1. Disconnect the machine from the power source. 2. Remove the drum from the spindle housing according to the instructions listed above in the "Removing the Drum" section. 3. Select the proper diameter of drum according to the type of workpiece to be sanded. 4. Select the proper table insert. Refer to the chart on page 8 for the correct insert for the chosen drum. 5. Clean any debris off the spindle before threading into the spindle housing. 6. Hold a open end wrench on the bottom jam nut while tightening the spindle nut clockwise. Note: Do not over tighten the spindle nut. REPLACING THE SANDING CLOTH Disconnect the machine from the power source. Remove the sanding drum. Remove the lock nut at the top of the drum. Cut off the old sanding cloth. Mount the new sanding cloth onto the sanding drum. Replace the sanding drum on the sander. Replace and tighten the top nut on the drum after the sanding cloth is mounted. -11 ADJUST THE SQUARENESS BETWEEN THE TABLE AND DRUM The squareness between the table and drum has been factory adjusted before shipment. However, after a long period of operation, the squareness may become inaccurate. To adjust the squareness, set the table to a flat horizontal position. The table tilting scale should read zero degrees. Place a 90° combination square on the table and against the drum. If the table is not 90° from the drum, adjust the angle of the table by changing the height of the resting post as shown. If the table is 90° from the drum, but the scale does not read zero degrees, set the scale to read zero degrees by loosening the screw on the angle indicator and setting the arrow to zero. -12 GENERAL LUBRICATION 1. Apply a small amount of grease to the trunnion screw, located under the table at the base of spindle. 2. Periodically check and make sure that there is enough oil in the gear box. 3. All bearings are permanently sealed, and require no further lubrication. 4. Apply a light oil film to the table after cleaning. LUBRICATION OF GEAR BOX 1. Open the rear door on the stand. 2. Put #80 - 90 gear oil into the gearbox through the oil inlet port, located on the top of the stand. 3. Fill the gear box with oil until the oil level is between the upper and lower marks on the gear sight window. The oil level window is on the oil tank inside the stand. 4. Change the oil after the first 500 hours of use. Change the oil every 2000 working hours afterwards. The des/red quantity of the part. -74 OPERATION The spindle sander is for sanding curved workpieces and the interior of wooden rings. Choose the sanding drum which best matches the size of the curve on the workpiece to be sanded. Be careful when sanding exceptionally small workpieces, as the force of the spinning drum may pull the workpiece from your hands. The sanding drums supplied with the machine are fitted with a 100 grit sanding cloth. You can change the sanding cloth when a finer sanding finish is required. -15 TROUBLESHOOTING TROUBLE PROBABLE CAUSE CORRECTION Motor does not run when power switch is turned "ON". 1. Switch is burned out. 2. Connection wire is loose or damaged. 1. Replace the switch. 2. Tighten or replace the wire. Motor does not run at full speed. 1. Power voltage is too low. 2.
